  1. A dog is a dog is a dog of a book Terrible book to teach poetry Painful to read Was assigned to my kid, and now I have to get some real poetry out as a comparison point so my kid doesn t hate poetry No idea of why this book has so many positive reviews even the first few lines about poetry being for girls is offensive and the author with no irony goes on to reference famous poems by men You d be better off teaching some actual poems by authors that are accessible at this age There are many.

  2. I use this book to teach poetry because Jack the narrator has a heartbreaking tale to tell and he does it by not writing poetry or does he since Ms Stretchberry keeps encouraging him to write down his feelings Then he gets to meet Walter Dean Meyers and develops a love relationship with writing poetry What better lesson can we learn

  3. This is a short but moving story of a boy who is VERY reluctant to write poetry at the beginning of the school year It is in open verse form itself and chronicles his evolution into a writer over the course of his year Along the way, he and we are introduced to many kinds of poetry through examples which he explores and uses as a guide In this way, one s class can also follow the same format He discovers that poetry can be a way to deal with very important moments in one s life, and the surprise [...]

  4. My child came home from school completely enad by this book When I read it with him, I was hooked as well I m not a professional reviewer like so many others here, but I am a mom who has read countless books with her kids And this one is outstanding What I love about this book is that it covertly introduces poetry to kids And it hooks them by introducing them to what I m going to call mind benders like The Red Wheelbarrow It s also written like a response journal I m so thrilled that the dots ar [...]

  7. Makes you feel good to read this It s a fast , comforting read Bonus, it reminds you that things are poetry than you might initially think I thought the poem referenced would be included as an appendix Maybe it s there but hard to find in the kindle I took away a star for that, not for the writing.

  8. With a title like this, you would expect a fun loving dog, but the real plot is not determined by the title alone I read this to my class to encourage their poetry writing and found myself crying It really was delightful.

  9. This really is a super little book that first came to prominence back in 2001 It is written from the perspective of Jack, an Elementary school pupil who initially has an aversion to reading writing poetry However, his teacher, Miss Stretchberry what a great name tries her best to encourage him Jack decides to write a weekly diary in which he initially reveals that he doesn t understand the relevance or importance of poetry On page 1 he states I don t want tobecause boysDon t write poetry.Girls d [...]

  10. What better way to introduce the power of poetry to a child, or indeed, an adult than with Sharon Creech s Love That Dog A short volume written in free verse, it does everything poetry should it elicits an emotional response, it paints vivid imagery in concise language and it speaks of the human condition A simple, accessible structure that describes a boy s response to poetry with his class teacher, gradually he begins to appreciate great words and even writes his own moving verse about his bel [...]
