  1. Based on the opening chapter, The Candidate seemed like it was going to be an intriguing, suspenseful and fast paced thriller I liked the novella format the book can be read in just a few hours but its short length actually works against it in the end The plot begins interestingly enough British ex pat Nicky Thorneycroft wakes up in his Luxembourg apartment with a huge hangover, a pair of women s underwear on his bedroom floor, receipts in his pants pockets for champagne and sandwiches from a lo [...]

  2. Story premise was interesting and the writing evocative but i felt there were far too many gaps and leaps Would have welcomed a longer, nuanced and elaborated tale This book felt as but as if it was dashed off under a pressing deadline I enjoy the author s writings but this was not among his best works.

  3. Not bad, barely held my interest, partly due to Russian involvement and being in a different country, different culture, making it slightly difficult to follow IMO.

  4. Fabulous story full of suspense.I would recommend it to anyone interested in a European style thriller.Entertaining quick read

  5. Too convoluted, it didn t ring true I had to force myself to finish the story The o my decent part is towards the end and it too fails to take off

  6. Daniel Pembrey is an author I ve only recently discovered through the Brit Crime literary online festival and this is the first book of his that I ve read It s a novella but packed full of plot It reminded me of old fashioned spy thrillers and a snowy Luxembourg adds to that overall feel Nick Thorneycroft wakes one morning to discover that he had entertained a guest the night before but he has no recollection of it and there s only a pair of black knickers as a clue Rather than just shrugging it [...]

  7. A very readable Euro thriller with a very strong sense of setting I think it will be interesting to see where Daniel Pembrey goes next on his fictional travels This is well worth a read, and has shades of El Leonard and other hard boiled American detective writers But it s also up to date, with an insight into modern Euro crime which is all too accurate Worth a read.
