  1. Very well written Interesting choice of content with lots of quotes from Darwin, himself Book was short, informative, and a good summary of Darwin s life and works It made me want to read about Darwin and his theories.Like the other reviewer, I would have liked to have seen on the Galapagos Islands, and a little about Darwin s theory of evolution, but maybe the author is holding that back for another book.Probably the best thing is, the book really brings out a lot about Darwin s personality I d [...]

  2. Darwin s Odyssey does a wonderful job of telling the life of this iconic scientist s fortuitous opportunity to board the HMS Beagle and travel the new world for five years collecting specimens and observing nature Sea travel in those days was arduous and dangerous and meant many personal sacrifices, but it left ample time for the young biologist to contemplate what he had seen and collected. We are all aware of his journey to the Galapagos Islands, but few know of the lifetime of comparing the sp [...]

  3. I have not read the Origin of Species or much else in detail about Darwin s life so I was looking for some insight into his thinking and what got him started. This book is an interesting, but much abbreviated diary of the voyage with a bit of insight into what triggered Darwin s thought processes However, it was not go in depth into either his travels or his thinking Some interesting vignettes for sure and some comments that hint at his thought process, but it only leads me to want to study.A ver [...]

  4. As the title indicates, the book focuses on the voyage of the Beagle, but gives a lot of background into Darwin s childhood and life leading up to the voyage, and then quickly summarizes events after the voyage. The book really only covers the voyage up to the Galapagos, quickly skimming over the rest of his travels.I ve tried to read Darwin s own books on the voyage, but became bogged down This simpler version was a lot easier to read but is interesting and gives some good information.Worthwhile [...]

  5. I was introduced to Darwin in my graduate studies and my image of his is the crusty old man with a grey beard I ve read several biographies of Darwin over the years but Jackson s portrayal of Darwin captured my imagination in a new way He may imbue Darwin with a modern sensibility that Darwin himself might not recognize but he brings out facets of Darwin and his social milieu not seen in the other books I ve read This is Darwin the humanist who transcended racial barriers and prejudices, the adv [...]

  6. The original book by Charles Darwin will always be my first and best choice for anyone who wants to know about that episode of his life Darwin was a good writer If you have the time and interest, then get his However, if you are just looking for a relatively short description of his life on and off the Beagle, then this book is the one for you It has no axe to grind, It is just a Reader s Digest version of that very important phase of his life.

  7. The writing is clear, and easy to understand It is for anyone who is interested in history and science This is the best written account of the journey of the Beagle that I have found , not withstanding Charley Brown.i watched a small bit about it on NatGeo about a month after and felt like I was an expert on the Galapagos I lands because of this book I keep it on my re read list it was so enjoyable.

  8. Quick read Gave a great overview on Darwin and the Beagle cruise It is amazing how his survival of the fittest evolved into the turmoil of evolution that we still debate today I really wonder how he would react to where we are today relative to what he was theorizing.

  9. I am loving this book Not quite finished it yet, but it s a very well written, fascinating narrative history and a rollicking adventure rolled into one Darwin s early years are so well painted he is very similar to many young men I know now in his sudden enthusiasms, dilettantism and passions Kevin Jackson depicts him as a very appealing, likeable character and the Beagle trip comes across a bit like a gap year adventure Darwin was plainly a sensitive young man, cut from a different cloth from m [...]

  10. A very readable history book, how refreshing Being guided through Darwin s life, observations and salient notes is most helpful This is so much than a bald record of his travels and encourages you to read further, fascinated by his intuition.Anyone interested by the various branches of science with which Darwin came into contact, and wondering about the development of the knowledge which built them, would find this book very helpful.
