  1. Originally posted at Fantasy Literature. The Walk up Nameless Ridge is a short story 18 pages, 39 minutes on audio written by indie writer Hugh Howey of recent WOOL fame You can order it for less than 2 at Audible or purchase it for 99c as a Kindle Single and then add the professional narration Jonathan Davis for 99c.The story is about a mountain climber who hopes to be the first person to summit the famous 60,000 foot peak on the planet Eno, even if it kills him What he wants than anything is to [...]

  2. Hugh again displays his gift of understanding people, the extremes we ll endure to find happiness, and the ever ominous fact that not everyone does With a clever science fiction what if to set up the story, we fall into step right away with a character attempting to climb a mountain on a distant planet which is at least twice as tall as Mt Everest This unnamed narrator admits up front that he s willing to kill to get to the top first, and as we get to know the competition racing him, we grow to [...]

  3. I enjoyed the story, and since this is a short story, I was expecting a bit of a punch at the end, which we kind of got, but since the horrible deeds he seems to be regretting aren t mentioned in the story itself, it doesn t pack as much punch as it could I went back and reread it, and couldn t find where the nameless narrator a nice touch hinted at doing anything wrong other than just hoping other people failed If that s his only regret, I don t think it deserves to be harped on like he does at [...]

  4. Ok, Howey is just a fantastic author This read will take you no time but will stick in your head and make you reexamine your own goals and what we categorize as success For me, the takeaway is that the how and why of doing is important than the doing itself But that is just for me The great thing about this book to me is that the author does not deliver the meaning on a silver platter The reader must think about it a little I have to say that I did have to read the ending a few times to try to c [...]

  5. I ve enjoyed Hugh Howey s Wool and Beacon 23 long form and episodic stories so I thought I d take a dip in a short encapsulated story I liked it Mountaineering is so far from anything I d do, yet I felt some kinship with the protagonist and his desire to be the first up the mountain A few hints at technology that doesn t yet exist seemed like Howey trying to be prophetic about adventure sports and the lengths that people go to and will continue to go to, to achieve beautiful but pointless things [...]

  6. Spoilers might be found below. As a mountaineer, and an admiring follower of Howey s, I wanted to like this book, but in truth I expected to hate it I wondered how many of the climbing tropes would be found within the story how much criticism there would be of ego, of the oxygen bottles left on mountains across the world, of the western climber sherpa relationship And all of that is present Howey has done his research, and observed keenly the ills of the modern elite climbing world I imagine he s [...]
