  1. I love this second book almost as much as my first Follett Eye of the Needle.I can t wait till I get the next in the series My sister was right, these are terrific books After reading several books on Nazism, I see the juxtaposition of then and now I also see the irony of what is happening in the USA false hysteria, bullying of the press, xenophobia, sexism and hurt and pain to the weak and less fortunate While Follett writes historical fiction, he is spot on with his work as he paints the Nazi [...]

  2. Since I purchased both Fall of Giants and Winter of the World book two , I felt committed to read both novels The first book was a disappointment and Winter of the World was even of a disappointment As I read it, I felt like I was reading something written by a high school student, not a world class novelist, and began to wonder if Follett actually wrote it himself It was certainly not of the quality of his previous books The characters in this book were even stereotypical than the previous book [...]

  3. This is a good book for its own sake, but the main thing is that it s an enjoyable way to learn about history in excellent detail through fiction If you are writing a doctoral thesis on world war 2 politics and history, it s probably not detailed and accurate enough, but if you re just a normal person who hasn t read anything like this since high school or a first year college survey of American history class Almost no other writer takes you through a story with as much historical detail as Foll [...]

  4. There s nothing pretty about this plot World War II breaks out and deprivation, hardship and heartbreak affect each family What makes this novel so compelling is the incredible attention to detail The bombing of Pearl Harbor reads like a news account and the horror of the German Russian battles are difficult to read Nonetheless I couldn t put this book down I read it in less time than many books half its length Surprisingly, even though it s book two of a trilogy, it is very much a stand alone s [...]

  5. I couldn t put the book down Several fictional plots are drawn amidst a well defined historical background fictional characters sometimes meeting, or even working with well known historical figures, thus highlighting some lesser known characteristics of and facts about them As this is the second book of Ken Follett s trilogy, many of the characters were either introduced in his first book, Fall of the Giants, or are the offspring of those characters. The story takes place before, during and after [...]

  6. I read the first of this trilogy which is probably why I gave it a 4 instead of 5 star rating Still an immensely interesting book with historical characters and mostly ones developed true for the time The scenes can be lustful, anguishing and loving This covers Hitler and the war in Germany and a little of the affects in France and Spain Characters carry on from first book but you can read and thoroughly enjoy this one, even if you haven t read no 1 Ken Follett has already, many times over, prov [...]

  7. If you read only one book this year this must be it I am not a literary critic but I urge everyone who likes a thoroughly good read to read this Once you start you will not be able to put it down The excitement is leaping from every page This is our story I am old enough to have lived through most of the events portrayed within its pages, from the outbreak of the second world war, the first atomic bombs to the Berlin Air Lift If you don t know the period 1933_1950 this book will bring it alive I [...]

  8. I seem to give most books that I enjoy 3 Stars I wish you had half stars as it would allow me to qualify my ratings somewhat If a book is well written and the story line is interesting then two Stars is too low but some are all those things and better than others No need to worry here Ken Follett carries on business as usual A vast global panorama set during one of the formative periods of our time The stories so brilliantly begun in the first book in the series are taken up here and just as int [...]
