  1. So, why the 4 stars Because while I don t believe Foote s prose to be anything special, his writing does get your attention While details such as appearance and mannerisms can get tiresome, they never become so with Foote He manages to make everything interesting and his anecdotes are a hoot The battles are vividly describedHowever, Shelby is a lost cause believer He basically discounts that the issue of slavery was the major cause of the Civil War and goes the states rights route which purveyor [...]

  2. This masterpiece is stunning in the historical detail provided, but also in Shelby Foote s lyrical prose His background as novelist, in the southern tradition, is evident in the flow of this definitive Civil War trilogy.I have read and loved Civil War history for over 45 years The only negative I can find in Shelby Foote s work is the fact that I will never find anything as satisfying to read, not just on the Civil War, but on any topic Oh well, I ve solved this dilemma by reading this trilogy f [...]

  3. I m a picky reader, often seeking faults with the books I read, but if there were many faults with the first volume of Foote s The Civil War, they were this reader s, not the author s There should be a caveat before beginning this series, however it is not for casual fans of history like myself Each volume is over 800 pages long Foote, to his credit, describes the troop movements and battles from the perspective of the time in which they were fought, but place names and battle names have since c [...]

  4. I will write the same review for all three of the late Shelby Foote s three volume set history of the American Civil War.If you saw the Ken Burns PBS series on the Civil War you saw the man with a twinkle in his eye as he told you a story about one of the many events that constituted the war His gentlemanly charm and an occasional twinkle in his text makes for fine reading Do keep in mind that there are different opinions about many of the topics Shelby writes Some compare him to Bruce Catton a [...]

  5. This is a classic, first of three volumes, depiction of the Civil War It does not go into any detail depth regarding the events prior to the war, it s about the war itself And it does an outstanding job detailing the battles and the generals and politicians who directed the strategies involved Highly recommended for the serious student of the Civil War It s long and detailed, and not for the casual reader.

  6. This outstanding narrative is easy to follow so long as you use the maps Shelby Foote is the one to read he shuffles back and forth, sometimes seeing the action or inaction from the North or the South You learn about the military leaders, their failures and successes sometimes wonder just how a particular series of actions could have been won or even fought to success given the circumstances You learn about the minds of some of the players Lee comes across as a thinker, McLellan as cautious and [...]
