  1. I was so excited to begin reading this series but only got through the first chapter and stopped reading I didn t appreciate the language I sure it would have been a great story but just couldn t stomach the foul language I won t be purchasing any further books from this author.

  2. Having read through several authors series Lee Child Jack Reacher, Robert Parker Spencer, James Lee Burke Robicheaux, Henning Mankill Wallender I have learned that you have to go to the first introduction of the character and sequentially learn the character With all of these authors, the location seems to act like a third character, shaping the tone for the novels Kurt Wallander would not fit in Wyoming, but Joe Pickett is brought to life in the rugged territory where he is a game warden You ne [...]

  3. I ve heard CJ Box speak several times at the Tucson Festival of Books and I ve always found him interesting and his books intriguing sounding but I ve put off reading them because the series is so looong and knowing myself well, once I read one I want to read them all in order So I started with one I thought was a standalone, The Highway, just to discover it wasn t exactly But what can I say, I was hooked, so I started searching the used stores and yard sales and good deals online and here I am [...]

  4. This was not my cup of tea I am fairly old and enjoy the many books written by the creators of this genre If not for the adult language this could have been a story written for preteen girls Way too much time spent on girly feelings and very little time spent on the topic of the book I stopped reading after the main character returned home and was reprimanded for being rude to his mother in law He had been released from the hospital with a bullet wound in his face and had hurried home to be with [...]

  5. Box is one of those unimaginative writers who titillates the reader with little soft porn situations aimed at horny guys He can t keep your attention with a well written story so he throws in a few sexually explicit encounters with loose women and cheaters thinking that will make the reader turn the pages Couldn t make it through the first hour of this turd.

  6. A friend recommended C J Box awhile back I began reading his Joe Pickett series and found it most rewarding mainly because my husband and I have traveled to that neck of the woods many times and love every inch of it Would retire there if it wasn t so cold So second best than being there is to read every word and imagine every tree, wild animal and unpassable road and not have to deal with the snow I really wish I had started the series at Book 1, however, the story in each book can carry it s o [...]

  7. After reading Craig Johnson and Tony Hillerman, I m happy to have discovered another strong western series Open Season introduces readers to Joe Pickett, Wyoming game warden, husband, and father When little Sheridan Pickett discovers a monster in her family s back yard, her father and her family become embroiled in a mystery that is almost than they can handle Almost.C J Box s prose is easy and comfortable as a well worn saddle, and as gripping an experience as any mystery lover could desire Hal [...]

  8. Ok, so I m taking being late to the party to a whole new level here, but I ve just discovered the Joe Pickett series by C.J Box just as he s about to release book number 18 What attracted me to this series was a review for the forthcoming release The Disappeared by fellow Book Blogger Reviewer The Real Book Spy There was something about the review that made my ears prick up and think I was going to like the series So, after much humming and hawing, I decided to head back to where it all began, B [...]

  9. Open Season is the first of C.J.Box s Joe Pickett series, and the second that I ve read having been attracted to Free Fire after reading an article on the real life virtues of the plot If you like crime thrillers, a taste of the old west, and nature then the Joe Pickett books are for you In Open Season, Joe Pickett is a Wyoming game warden preparing for the start of antelope season As he prepares pancakes for his pregnant wife and two daughters, his eldest tells him of the monster she saw in the [...]
