  1. This book isn t for everyone, but I loved it The juxtaposition of Ruth and Dana and their families made their stories each very clear I believe I would have liked both these women as adults, but not so much as kids, but they were both unwitting prisoners of their families My favorite character was Edwin, the head of the Plank family He had so much love to give, not only to his family, but to the land, which had been in his family for eleven generations His love, however, changed the course of tw [...]

  2. This is my first Maynard book I really enjoy adult characters that are well developed considering complicated issues All that is here but none of the extreme sellout shock value of Jane Smiley Maynard is so talented The writing is smooth and enjoyable.I suppose there s not too many plot lines that I haven t already seen in part of whole but what s original is the characters people that are authentic, real and whole created from her pen and mind Books are a personal choice If you like characters, [...]

  3. Interesting characters Well developed The book is captivating in the unraveling of complicated relationships Well written Satisfying A good read from start to finish.

  4. I chose this novel because of the setting in New Hampshire, but I stayed up all night reading because the characters were truly engaging and the plot drew me in Although the key element of the story, the relationship between two families, is obvious from the start, the characters are written with depth and compassion A truly enjoyable read.

  5. What a great book I love the way Joyce Maynard writes This is a truly wonderful book So well written I hated for it to end.

  6. The novel is completely predictable The plot is contrived relying on sensationalism rather than creativity The writing is mechanical and dry, like reading a technical manual The characters are flat The book is worse than most of the pulp fiction available through Unlimited.

  7. This book may be Maynard s best yet There are two families the Planks and the Dickersons The Planks live on a farm that has been in their family for a lot of years They raise strawberries and have a stand where they sell to the public The Dickersons are neighbors and customers The link to the families is that Ruth Plank and Dana I believe is the name were born on the same day the fourth of July Connie Plank, the mother of Ruth, sees to it the families stay in touch The Dickersons move around a l [...]

  8. I wasn t sure if I would like this book As it turns out, I loved it Dana and Ruth are both very real women, proceeding through their parallel, and very different lives The obstacles they faced were true to time, and a testimony to what women everywhere were dealing with The secret they didn t realize they shared was incredible Neither ever felt accepted, or that they fit in, when in reality, they were the right pieces in the wrong puzzles of their respective lives Joyce Maynard, you gained a fan [...]

  9. I just finished this book and I loved it Joyce Maynard is an exceptional writer, in my opinion I just read the other reviews and several complained about the surprise wasn t really a surprise and one said that early on you could guess what the surprise actually was But, they obviously didn t read the entire book as the BIG surprise was almost at the end of the book I felt that the author did very well in defining the main characters and the emotions were conveyed extremely well It is obvious ear [...]

  10. While a generally good story, I figured out the plot twists very early on I did not expect lesbian sex, and I did need to skip forward through this as it was no way relative to the story Perhaps there should be a warning A good read, what kept me going was to find out how it all came together And, it did indeed, come together just as I had predicted.
