  1. First Nero Wolfe is hired to deal with the problem of a will This is quite complicated and involves three prominent sisters, who are shocked and distressed that their brother Noel left most of his fortune 7 million to his mistress His widow wants to contest the will, but the sisters prefer to negotiate with the mistress to avoid the scandal of a messy lawsuit The sisters are all high achievers and cherish their reputations. When murder enters the picture, Wolfe s assignment changes Now it s find [...]

  2. I have been reading the old mystery classics everything from Agatha Christie to Micky Spillane and have been thoroughly enjoying them I just finished Book 8 of the Nero Wolfe series and have enjoyed each of the books, including this one The books rely on an intricate factual development to an end revealing the solution to the mystery and verbal byplay between the characters rather than on action.I think we all see enough action on the news every night so that something like the Nero Wolfe series [...]

  3. I don t remember how many times I have gone to read a Nero Wolfe book to help me relax I didn t remember much about this book but I did know the killer Wolfe needed the money and is offered a job of meditating a strange will This is one of the times Nero left his home to see the area where the murder occurred He had the all of the PIs he uses trailing individuals He is keeping secrets again from Archie who finds a body in the bar and Wolfe disappears I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND SERIES.

  4. Nero Wolfe is the world s greatest detective and its most eccentric In Where There s a Will , he is hired by the three Hawthorne sisters, each one an unusual character June, a controversial author who is married to the current US Secretary of State May, a towering intellectual and now college president and April, a beautiful and talented actress Their brother has died and left the bulk of his sizable estate not to his wife, but to his mistress The girls, and the male characters surrounding them, [...]

  5. Rex Stout has a well deserved reputation as a writer and the Nero Wolfe series exemplifies it Always sent looking up a word or two Love the rough ambiance of NYC in the 30s through the 50s Very good read.

  6. I love the Nero Wolfe books and have read each of them at least twice What I like about Where There s a Will is the three Hawthorne sisters April, May, and June As always, I love Archie s wit, Cramer s stolid pursuit of whoever he thinks the murderer is in that particular book, and I love Fred, Saul, and the gang Stout s writing is always precise and witty you can close your eyes and see the characters. That said, I think this plot wasn t strong, and so the novel just doesn t stand out for me Als [...]

  7. I have done what I considered the entire Rex Stout omnibus several times, and have a bookshelf full All the Zecks, all the early, mid and late ones, but somehow I had missed this one Is is great or not so great How can you tell Any undiscovered volume is always the best one to read I enjoyed it, especially since I had recently re read Too Many Cooks for about the 7th time It seemed to me to be spot on for the attitudes in our neighborhood at least of 1960 s.If you ve read some of the Wolfe stori [...]

  8. I enjoy the story This one we couldn t have figured out as we didn t have some essential information But the fun of Nero Wolfe books is hearing Archie tell the story And meeting the characters, following the tale as it unfolds This is number eight Not as good as his later ones Neither of the two protagonists is as clearly delineated as in later books But worth the time.

  9. If P G Wodehouse had written American detective stories with a left wing feel they would probably have come out very like the Nero Wolfe stories Stylish, benign, witty stories revolving round a curious family of beautifully drawn central characters enmeshed in satisfyingly intricate and improbable situations presided over by the gratifyingly infuriating Wolfe himself This one involves three sisters fizzing with outrage over a dubious will their brother left before a death which turns out to be s [...]
