  1. After two books in this series, I simply don t follow all the praise This book is better written than Gardens of the Moon by a large margin, and Erikson does display some good detailed writing earlier on the book However, as it treads on, some of that detail is lost and the book begins to spiral a bit out of control The interesting stories become uninteresting, and the characters which are not his specialty never develop distinct personalities Reading these books, I have yet to really like or ca [...]

  2. Here s where the series gets good.Ok, did you read Gardens of the Moon Did you like it Then you will like Deadhouse Gates Erikson s writing is assured, his characters are better, he has become a confident skillful writer He s also slyly funny It sneaks up on you because you don t really expect it in the grimdark world he has created If you didn t like Gardens of the Moon at all, this probably won t change you on the series but if you liked it but found it too confusing or weird, give Deadhouse G [...]

  3. UmmmmY DO YOU MAKE ME FEEL SO STUPIDI finished and I would give this stars but it makes me feel like I m a fantasy idiot I m not, I know that I m not, I usually can really dig in and understand what is going on in most fantasy But in this series it is so dense that I read all the words and feel like I m maybe only picking up a third of what I should be.The world building is immense and Steven Erickson isn t afraid to be brutal and kill everyone in the book you liked But are they really dead Well [...]

What an enticing mess this is A bewildering array of names, races, places, plots and sub plots , battles, monsters, demons, winged monkeys And then, when I finish the book, I find the bloody glossary Even at 960 pages, DG was a constant, breathless page turner Erikson machine guns stuff at his readers There is next to no respite from action or intrigue, and nothing ever telegraphs what follows There s a nervous even febrile energy to the whole proceeding that either sweeps readers along or drown [...]

  5. A truly epic scale book and series, I am rereading the whole series for the second time but I have read some of the books multiple times to refresh my memory before a new one was released, and every time there is a detail or story line that ties in to future books, or sometimes just a nod to a character or an event that make this almost essential to reread if you enjoyed it the first time around. My favourite collection of books, Erikson and Esslemont have created something incredible, and while [...]
